Seven Reasons Why You Should Attend a Job Fair.

An oval sticker that reads I love job fairs.

If there was a job fair in your area, would you go? As someone with human resource and hiring experience, I can tell you there is more to find at a job fair than just a job.

I’m Christian with WorkBC.ca and here are seven reasons why you should attend a job fair.

1) Improve your networking skills.

Networking builds connections with employers and other professionals who can offer career advice and help with your job search.

2) Find jobs that may not be posted online.

Some recruiters use job fairs to fill vacancies rather than post online. This means you are potentially seeing roles that others will not.

3) Learn more about an industry of interest.

Want to work in a particular industry? A job fair is your chance to get an inside look and ask questions.

4) Discover career paths in industries you may not have considered.

Not all accountants work at accounting firms, and not all graphic designers work for marketing companies. Your skills may be needed in industries you never imagined. Job fairs let you explore unique career possibilities.

5) Become better at approaching employers.

Challenge yourself to talk to at least four employers at a job fair and make a list of what you want them to know about you. Remember, practice makes perfect.

6) Avoid gatekeepers and get your resume in front of a recruiter.

When you apply for a job, your resume usually goes through applicant software or human resource staff before getting to the employer. At a job fair, the employer is in front of you, eager to read your resume.

7) Have actual job interviews.

For many, job interviews can be uncomfortable. A job fair is your opportunity to improve your interview skills and better present yourself. Learn how to prepare for an interview by reading interview tips or watching a video.
