Implementing Skilled Trades Certification

By November 30, 2023, trades workers must register as an apprentice or become a certified journeyperson in these mechanical and electrical trades:

  1. Gasfitter Class A and B
  2. Steamfitter/pipefitter
  3. Refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanic
  4. Sheet metal worker
  5. Powerline technician
  6. Industrial electrician
  7. Electrician (construction)

Highlights:

  • Workers in these trades can continue to work during the transition.
  • Uncertified workers and employers will have a one-year window to go through the process.
  • Nothing will change for workers who are already certified journeypersons (including Red Seal endorsements) or registered apprentices.
  • Over 30 multi-lingual SkilledTradesBC advisors across the province can help workers navigate the registration process or enter the challenge pathway to write the certification exam.
  • Certification exams in these seven trades will be free during the one-year transition period.
  • Provincial and federal supports are available to further reduce financial barriers to certification, including training costs, such as tuition, travel, living away from home, child-care costs and loss of wages.

In 2024, three additional automotive trades (heavy-duty equipment technician, automotive service technician, and autobody and collision technician) will start to be phased in as skilled trades certification trades. They will also have one year to transition once announced. At this time, no action is required from workers or employers in the automotive sector.
