Linda overcame her own barriers so she could help others
Linda Marklund once felt that long term employment was impossible for her. Facing chronic health issues, mental health concerns and addiction had left her feeling overwhelmed.
After living clean and free of substance for four months, Linda was eager for a fresh start in the work world, so she turned to WorkBC Centre Merritt for help. She wanted a job where she could connect with her community and give back to others who might be struggling. She was interested in becoming a Community Support Worker, but had her own challenges to overcome before she was able to help others.
Linda got the guidance, training, and confidence boost she needed at WorkBC Centre Merritt. She worked closely with a Vocational Counsellor throughout the process. She took a Disability-related Employment Needs Assessment to help her explore her strengths and challenge areas and discover her ideal work conditions. She participated in several workshops, was referred to a program to support her mental wellness, and was supported to apply for training and secure more appropriate housing.
Linda applied herself with dedication and completed the Community Support Worker training program with honours. She now enjoys being a Community Support Worker, with two jobs that she absolutely loves - one with the Mustard Seed and another at a Lutheran Church in Kamloops.
“I very much appreciated the care and attention I received to overcome the challenges I had at the time,” said Linda. “My confidence is much higher and I’m even feeling it in my personal life and other social situations.”
Best of all, Linda is now using her newfound confidence and skills to help people facing the same kind of challenges she worked so hard to overcome.
