WorkBC Employment Services for Youth


Youth can access a variety of free employment services including career exploration, job search services, resource centre use, financial supports to start a job, work experience placements, training support, and counselling, to help them upgrade their skills, find and prepare for employment.


 

What Awaits You at WorkBC Centre

  • One-on-one support from expert staff to meet your specific employment related needs.
  • Job search services include assistance with resume and interview preparation, job search tools, and access to local job opportunities.
  • Fully staffed self-serve resource centre for independent job search activities, including use of a computer and a photocopier.
  • Personal employment planning to help you develop work goals including exploring what education or training may be required to reach those goals.
  • Customized employment provides one-on-one support if you have disabilities or barriers to employment, to help you discover work-related strengths and abilities. You will work alongside an Employment Counsellor to create a job that fits you best.
  • Paid and unpaid work experience placements to help you gain work experience and develop your skills.
  • Skills training to upgrade skills:
    • A high school diploma or adult high school diploma
    • Academic upgrading
    • Health and safety certification, like First Aid and Food Safe
    • Trades certification, like forklift operator or traffic control
    • Basic certificate courses, like Microsoft Office
    • A diploma, like Health Care Assistant or Early Childhood Educator
    • Funding support may be available for tuition, books, living supports, or other related costs.
  • Self-employment services for support starting your own business.
  • Financial supports for transportation, child-care, essential work clothing, tools, supplies, or equipment.
  • Free mental health counselling to support employment readiness.
  • On-the-job support, such as coaching and conflict resolution, for the first year of employment.
  • If you have a disability, there are supports available to help you keep your job or to start a new job. WorkBC staff can help you figure out what you need and if you’re eligible. Support is customized to individualized needs and can include:
  • Assistive devices, equipment and technology (e.g. computer software)
  • Ergonomic supports (e.g. ergonomic furniture, lighting systems)
  • Restorative supports (e.g. canes, crutches)
  • Workplace access and modification
